FAL FROM GRACE Jerry Falwell Jr sued by Liberty University for $10MILLION after ex-president involved in pool boy sex scandal
LIBERTY University has filed a $10million lawsuit against the school’s ex-president Jerry Falwell Jr after the pool boy sex scandal.
The suit, filed Thursday, claims breach of contract and fiduciary duty.
It also alleges Mr Falwell withheld scandalous and potentially damaging information from Liberty’s board of trustees while negotiating a new contract for himself in 2019 under false pretenses.
Mr Falwell also failed to disclose and address “his personal impairment by alcohol,” the suit also alleges.
Mr Falwell claimed in August last year he was being threatened with extortion by Giancarlo Granda, a pool boy attendant, who had a sexual relationship with his wife Becki for several years.
The suit claims that because the sexual relationship and resulting “extortion” were kept secret, Mr Falwell endangered and later damaged the reputation of the university.
It claims “Falwell Jr chose personal protection” instead of divulging the active threat to Liberty’s board.
Scott Lamb, a spokesman for Liberty University, said the school had no comment on the suit.
The suit was filed on the same day as the university’s board of trustees arrived in Lynchburg, Virginia, for its semiannual meeting where they are set to discuss the university’s future, including the search for a permanent leader.
A close associate of Falwell’s father, Jerry Prevo, has been serving as interim president since August.
Mr Prevo is also a member of the board’s executive committee.
The real reason Mr Falwell renegotiated his contract with the board, the suit claims, was the possibility Granda would publicly reveal his relationship with the family.
The suit also states Falwell “improperly and errantly” told the press he was owed $10.5million after his departure in August.
His severance should have been $2.5 million, or two years’ salary under the higher salary he negotiated in 2019, the suit claims.
It also claims Mr Falwell used a non-Liberty email address and personal devices to conduct university business.
While Liberty paid for the devices and confidential university information is stored on them, Mr Falwell has refused to return them or disclose access codes, the university claims.
The university has brought in an independent forensic accounting firm to investigate its operations under Mr Falwell, with the investigation still ongoing.
Falwell, who voiced his support for President Donald Trump in 2016, took over as the president of Liberty University after his dad, evangelist Reverend Jerry Falwell Sr, died in 2007.
But, he resigned in August 2020 after several controversies had him in hot water with the religious college.
After news of his resignation came to light, Falwell denied stepping down from his position, but soon after confirmed he did leave his role.
Liberty asked Falwell to take a leave of absence after he posted a photo of himself with his wife's assistant with their pants unzipped earlier this month.
Granda has also claimed Falwell encouraged the sexual relationship between him and Becki.
The now-29-year-old claimed Jerry was "aware from day one of our relationship and he did – in fact – watch."
Granda backed his claims with emails, text messages, and other evidence.
